In 1992, the South Carolina General Assembly passed the South Carolina Energy Efficiency Act, which created the State Energy Office and called for the creation of a comprehensive state energy plan (“State Energy Plan” or “Plan”). Section 48-52-210 of the South Carolina Code of Laws governs the State Energy Plan. The State Energy Plan provides a comprehensive blueprint for a reliable, resilient, clean, and affordable energy system for South Carolina residents and businesses. The 2016 State Energy Plan initiated a dynamic process. Through continued stakeholder engagement, the Energy Office updates the Plan to evolve in accordance with the needs of our State and innovation. The Plan in accordance with Legislative intent is designed to maximize reliability, environmental quality, energy conservation, and energy efficiency while minimizing the cost of energy throughout the state.

Updates to the State Energy Plan

Pursuant to SC Code Ann. § 48-52-430, the State Energy Office annually prepares a state energy action plan to provide updates to the SC Public Utilities Review Committee (PURC) and to the General Assembly on the Energy Office’s activities to further the State Energy Plan and the State’s energy policy as set forth in SC Code Ann. § 48-52-210.
